Schuster, Michael ; Handl, Vladimír (advisor) ; Kunštát, Miroslav (referee)
This bachelor thesis discusses the German Green Party and the changes it has undergone regarding the active involvement of the German army into a missions in abroad. The analysis describes the issue against the background of the conflicts in Kosovo, Afghanistan and Iraq. The German Greens are a party whose roots go back to the peace movement of the 1970s, and the peaceful way of resolving the conflicts is one of the main pillars of the party. When the Green Party first came into government in Germany, it immediately needed to solve the issue of involvement in the conflict in Kosovo. Government took the attitude towards it that it is necessary to be actively involved in it. Just two years later, the government coalition of the Social Democrats and the Green Party dealt with participation in another military conflict, which was caused by the terrorist attack of 11th September 2001. Despite expressing solidarity with American politicians, Germany did not join the "wars on terror" in Afghanistan and in Iraq to the same extent as the conflict in Kosovo. The thesis uses the concept of Zivilmacht (civilian power), which examines how Germany corresponds to this model under the government of the red-green coalition. The aim of the work is to explain the reasons for the change in the position of the Green...
Goethe Institut and German Foreign Policy after 1990
Vysloužil, Jan ; Tomalová, Eliška (advisor) ; Handl, Vladimír (referee)
This thesis focuses on programme strategy of Goethe-Institute in the broader frame of German foreign policy between 1990-2020. The theoretical part examines Goethe-Institute though the scope of soft power, public and cultural diplomacy. The development and the change of priorities of the Goethe-Institute are also outlined. Additionally, the independence of the Goethe-Institute from the German government is taken to account. A case study of the Goethe- Institute in Prague then proves a shift in priorities of the institute from bilateral Czech-German agenda to European topics. This shift is shown on specific examples of events held between the year 1991 and 2020.

Zavadilová, Barbora ; Handl, Vladimír (advisor) ; Eberle, Jakub (referee)
The bachelor thesis discusses the German development policy in Latin America between years 1990 and 2011. The region is not considered to be a part of German key strategic interests. However, the Federal republic plays a role of a "global donor" and supports the countries of Latin America significantly and carries out major development projects there. The thesis will firstly present the basic political context, describe the mutual relationships between Germany and Latin America and analyse key interests that are the base for the development cooperation. In the following part, the concept of a civilian power will be applied to the German development policy in the region to observe to which amount the character of the cooperation corresponds with the basic attributes of foreign policy of a normative-oriented civilian power as an ideal type. Statements of the executive representatives, government policy papers, statistical data and opinions of the academic sectors undergo the analysis. The aim of this paper is to present the development policy with the monitored region in its complexity and analyse which meanings do the German actors assign to the examined reality.

This doctoral thesis deals with the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) and its foreign policy towards Czechoslovakia during the 1970s and 1980s. It aims not only to analyse the relationship between SPD and KSČ (Communist Party of Czechoslovakia) but also the communication and cooperation between SPD, Czechoslovak dissidents and Czechoslovak political emigration. The main goal of the dissertation is to answer three basic questions: What were the goals of social democratic eastern policy (Ostpolitik) towards ČSSR? Were they achieved? Does the party changed its attitude towards Czechoslovakia after 1982, when it became an opposition party?
Syrian Civil War from the Perspective of Czech and German Diplomacy
NOVOTNÁ, Tereza
This bachelor thesis elaborates on the topic of one of the biggest humanitarian crises since the Second World War - the Syrian Civil War. Special attention is given to the perspective of Czech and German diplomacy regarding this conflict. At first, the reader is made familiar with the aspects of authoritarian ruling in the Middle East. These aspects are analysed in a broader context, regarding the Arab spring, which started in 2011 and later developed into Arabellion. Secondly, the main events of the Syrian Civil War (till late 2018) are described as well, so that the reader can get an overview of the process of this war. And last but not least, the Czech foreign policy and the German foreign policy towards the affairs in Syria are analysed and commented by the author of the thesis. As both countries are members of the EU, which has its own Common Foreign and Security Policy, this aspect is also mentioned in the conclusion of the thesis.
Germany and Ukraine's Path to non-signing the Association Agreement
Svobodová, Tereza ; Handl, Vladimír (advisor) ; Eberle, Jakub (referee)
This thesis deals with German foreign policy on example of negotiations of Association Agreement between the EU and Ukraine in years 2007-2013. The purpose of this paper was to analyse German interests in these negotiations and to answer the question, if Germany acted more as a civilian or geoeconomic power. Moreover, I focused on the mistakes of German politicians during this process and how it could influence the negative outcome. Firstly, the thesis follows up main basis of German foreign policy and European Neighbourhood Policy, mainly Eastern Partnership, and the role of Germany in these. The main chapter studies chronologically the process of the treaty negotiations and focuses particularly on press releases and statements of key German politicians. These are compared with chosen criteria to assign the actions to one of the concepts. This thesis comes to a conclusion that Germany acted as a civilian power because it tried to multilateralize the relations, stressed the principles and values and avoided conflicts. Germany's mistake was that it did not pay enough attention to the negotiations and had no clear strategy for this area. With its passivity and lack of interest in Ukraine itself it contributed to the failure of the negotiations.

Nation branding as a soft power building tool : the case of Germany
Felknerová, Petra ; Tomalová, Eliška (advisor) ; Jeřábek, Martin (referee)
This master thesis deals with the concept of nation branding and its application in German domestic and foreign policy as a soft power building tool. Nation branding is quite a new concept in the international relations that extends into many fields like public diplomacy, cultural diplomacy, marketing or public relations. With its assistance, states create a positive image which they promote to the foreign public in order to become more attractive and competitive at the international level. The thesis is divided into two parts. The first part creates a theoretical background for the analysis. It concentrates on defining the position of nation branding in the field of international relations and introduces the theory of competitive identity. The second part analyses the German nation image building while using the theory of competitive identity. Germany manages its image in two ways - via nation branding campaigns and via six dimensions of its competitive identity. Both ways as well as the German brand as a whole are properly analyzed and simultaneously their strengths and weaknesses are identified. The final part of the thesis summarizes the most important findings and draws the conclusion.
